What is DNA?
Deep within every cell lies DNA, the master blueprint for all living things. It's a long, spiral-staircase molecule containing all the instructions needed to build and maintain an organism.
The Role of Codons
The DNA's instructions are transcribed into a message molecule called RNA. This message is read in three-letter "words" called codons. Each codon is a specific sequence of three bases (e.g., AUG, GCA, UUU).
The Genetic Code
This "dictionary" that translates codons into amino acids is called the genetic code. It's remarkably universal, meaning it's nearly the same for all organisms, from bacteria to humans. This shared language is a powerful piece of evidence for a common ancestor for all life on Earth.
Protein Synthesis
A cellular machine called the ribosome reads these codons. Each codon tells the ribosome which amino acid to add to a growing chain. This chain of amino acids folds into a complex 3D shape, becoming a protein.
Proteins: The Workers
Proteins are the workhorses of the cell. They act as enzymes, provide structural support, transport molecules, and carry out countless other tasks that are essential for life.
Mutations: A Glitch in the Code
Sometimes, errors or "mutations" can occur in the DNA sequence. A single base change can alter a codon, which might cause the wrong amino acid to be inserted, or tell the protein to stop growing altogether. These changes can be harmless, but sometimes they lead to diseases.
